About Sagano Bamboo Forest
An independent guide to the Sagano Bamboo Forest in Kyoto's Arashiyama district and a comparison of the guided tours that visit it. We compare tour listings, official visitor information and recent traveller feedback. We do not operate or personally conduct these tours, hold no bookings and pull no rickshaws. The tours sit on the Sagano Bamboo Forest tours comparison, and the sources behind every number are set out in our editorial methodology.
Why this site exists
Search for this grove and the guides that come back promise you the photograph with bamboo pressing in from both sides, then route you along the public path where a fence and a stream of pedestrians stand between you and that shot. The lane in the photograph is open only to rickshaws. Some still quote an entrance fee that was scrapped before 2015. Others send you out for the December lantern illumination, which ended in 2021 and now returns only as short ticketed runs with dates that change yearly.
None of that is secret. It is in the operators' own small print, on the temple noticeboards and in recent visitor reports. Putting it next to the price is the entire job of this site.
Where the facts come from
Tour prices, durations, ratings, review counts, inclusions and age limits are read off each operator's own listing on the date shown on the page, in US dollars. Tour listings checked: August 2026.
Temple fees, opening hours and access rules are checked against the temples' own published information and recent first-hand visitor reports, and dated where they appear: Tenryu-ji, Okochi-Sanso and the Iwatayama Monkey Park fees were verified in August 2026. Traveller feedback reviewed: more than 5,900 verified reviews across the six listed tours.
Where an operator states something inconvenient in its own words, such as the walking tour that admits its transport and entry fees are paid on the day on top of the sticker price, we quote it rather than smooth it over. Review quotes carry the reviewer's name, country where given, and date.
How this site earns
Booking links on this site go to GetYourGuide and carry an affiliate tag. If you book through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you; the price you pay is set by the platform and is the same with or without our link. Commissions do not reorder the comparisons: the tour with 2 reviews sits at the bottom of the catalog whatever it would pay.
The full mechanics are on the affiliate disclosure page.
What we do not do
We do not take bookings, process payments, or answer for operators' cancellations; those sit with GetYourGuide and the operators named on each listing. We do not accept payment for placement, we do not write reviews of tours, and we do not claim to have ridden every rickshaw in Kyoto. When something here goes stale, the fastest fix is a note through the contact page.
